Amadodana Ase Wesile Releases 40th Anniversary Album MONGHALI MESIA

South Africa’s celebrated gospel choir, Amadodana Ase Wesile, has released their 40th anniversary album, MONGHALI MESIA. This release marks a significant milestone in a four-decade journey that has deeply influenced South Africa’s cultural and spiritual landscape. The choir is renowned for its rich vocal harmonies and spiritual storytelling, appealing to audiences in churches, cultural venues, and events like NIROX Sculpture Park.

Formed in 1985 by Thomas Mokhati within the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, Amadodana Ase Wesile has become a symbol of African gospel traditions and multi-generational musical influence. Their contributions extend beyond music. In April 2024, acclaimed fashion designer Lukhanyo Mdingi featured the choir in his Provenance Part Two exhibition at Constitution Hill, using the hymn “Siyakudumisa Thixo” as a sonic archive of cultural memory. Mdingi referred to the group as a “National Treasure,” acknowledging their lasting impact on South Africa’s spiritual and creative heritage.

In September 2025, the University of Johannesburg hosted a commemorative event celebrating Amadodana Ase Wesile and founder Thomas Mokhati. Chaired by Dr. Victor Ramathesele, the gathering brought together scholars, artists, and community members to reflect on the choir’s enduring contributions, solidifying their position as cultural custodians.

The group has earned seven South African Music Awards (SAMAs) and produced a catalogue of acclaimed albums. Their international recognition includes winning First Prize at the International Gospel Music Festival in Istanbul, Turkey. From their Soweto origins, they have performed across Europe, the Middle East, and Southern Africa, introducing global audiences to South African gospel.

Amadodana Ase Wesile will perform live at NIROX in November as part of Good Neighbours: Instruments of Africa, offering audiences a chance to experience their iconic sound firsthand.
