The Crown Gospel Music Awards are making an emotional return to their roots this year. The 18th edition of South Africa’s premier gospel awards will take place at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) on Sunday, 23 November, marking a heartfelt homecoming to the venue where it all began.
This year’s ceremony holds deep significance. It will be the first edition hosted at the Durban ICC since the passing of the event’s visionary founder, Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule, who died in August 2024 after a short illness. Zanele, also known for her work as a Ukhozi FM presenter, led the awards for 15 years at the Durban ICC before they briefly relocated to Johannesburg in 2023.
After two years away, the Crowns are returning to Durban to celebrate Zanele’s enduring legacy. Awards spokesman Pastor Sthembiso Mtshali confirmed that the return is both symbolic and sentimental. “We are excited to be back where it all began, and we call upon the public to secure their seats early for what promises to be the biggest gospel gathering in Africa,” he said.
Pastor Mtshali emphasized that this year’s ceremony is dedicated to honouring Zanele’s life and contribution to gospel music. “This year will be a heartfelt tribute to her memory as we celebrate in her beloved city of Durban,” he added.
The 2025 edition has already broken records. Organizers received 890 entries across multiple categories, the highest in the event’s history. The number reflects the growing reach and influence of the Crowns, which continue to elevate both established and emerging gospel artists.
Fans can expect fierce competition for the coveted Crown trophies. The official list of nominees will be announced at the end of October, building anticipation for one of the most prestigious events in the gospel calendar.
The return to the Durban ICC marks a full-circle moment for the Crown Gospel Music Awards. It stands as both a celebration of faith and a powerful tribute to the woman who helped shape the future of South African gospel music.
