Lebo Sekgobela: “I was full of anger”

Gospel singer Lebo Sekgobela has shared the deeply personal journey behind her latest album, Kept By Grace, in a revealing conversation with The Times of Eswatini. What began as a passion project became a cathartic expression of her faith, resilience, and healing.

“I was not in a good space… I was full of anger”

Sekgobela explained that the album’s title wasn’t chosen lightly. “I ended up calling the album Kept By Grace because I was not in a good space to record… I think I was questioning God with some of the things. I felt like I was ready to record but God said I am not because I was full of anger. I needed to be strong. Some of the songs I was writing, I was questioning God.”

Her words reveal a raw honesty—a willingness to confront doubt and frustration instead of hiding it. That emotional honesty made the album more than a collection of songs; it stands as a reflection of a spiritual battle and, ultimately, victory.

Health struggles and healing through music

Adding to the album’s emotional weight, Sekgobela disclosed that she faced significant health challenges prior to heading into the studio. These trials added urgency and depth to her songwriting, turning Kept By Grace into a testimony of overcoming both physical and spiritual adversity.

A tour exposure that transcended borders

Before her visit to Eswatini, Sekgobela toured the United Kingdom, sharing the stage with fellow South African Gospel artists. Speaking about her international experience, she said:

“Before coming to Eswatini, I was in the UK where we performed alongside other South African musicians… They allowed us to sing in our own language… The reception of our music was great and we felt humbled to be part of such a movement.”

Her ability to touch global audiences—even when singing in native tongues—spoke to Gospel’s universal power. This international embrace, she believes, sets the tone for her upcoming tour and carries the message of Kept By Grace to new corners of the world.

Sekgobela’s candidness transforms Kept By Grace from just an album into a chronicle of spiritual revival. It invites fans on a journey that’s at once personal and relatable: one where faith isn’t blind, but tested—and strengthened.

As the tour unfolds, those who encounter her songs and her story will find a powerful reminder that even in life’s darkest moments, grace can prevail.
