Pastor Koketso Molaolwe, known to many as Pastor K through Mmuso Church and Mmuso Worship, opens up about the story behind his calling and ministry. His journey reveals how childhood absence, broken trust, and personal struggles shaped the leader he is today.
Pastor K shares the profound impact of growing up without his parents. The absence of his father left deep scars, making it difficult to trust not only people but even God. He explains that seeing his earthly father desert him created a barrier to trusting his Heavenly Father. The emptiness led him into alcohol, fleeting relationships, and other coping mechanisms in his teenage years.
The transformation began during a men’s camp in the Drakensberg. Pastor K injured his knees and initially felt defeated. An older mentor, Yan, offered to run on his behalf, carrying his burden and showing him what it means to be cared for. This moment revealed God’s love and the fatherly presence Pastor K had longed for.
During the camp, a symbolic exercise challenged him to carry a rock representing his manhood to a cross. The rock grew heavier with each step, symbolizing the emotional weight he had carried from childhood abandonment. Placing the rock down represented surrender, healing, and the start of a new chapter in his life. This experience allowed him to trust God fully and eventually led to the planting of Mmuso Church.
Pastor K emphasizes that God healed him before giving him a platform. His personal struggles with trust, lust, and identity could have undermined his ministry if left unresolved. Through God’s grace, he was transformed, showing that healing is essential before taking on leadership roles. He reflects, “If you succeed before you heal, success will expose your brokenness. You would rather expose your brokenness to God than let success expose it.”
His journey offers practical lessons. Trust God even when it seems impossible. Painful seasons prepare and shape you. Surrender leads to transformation. God carries you before placing responsibility in your life.
Pastor K is also writing a book to share his story more broadly, offering a glimpse into how God uses brokenness to build strength and purpose.
“Now remember what you were, my friends, when God called you. From the human point of view few of you were wise or powerful or of high social standing. God purposely chose what the world considers nonsense in order to shame the wise, and he chose what the world considers weak in order to shame the powerful. He chose what the world looks down on and despises and thinks is nothing, in order to destroy what the world thinks is important. This means that no one can boast in God’s presence. But God has brought you into union with Christ Jesus, and God has made Christ to be our wisdom. By him we are put right with God, we become God’s holy people and are set free. So then, as the scripture says, ‘Whoever wants to boast must boast of what the Lord has done.’”
1 Corinthians 1:26-31 GNT
Pastor K’s testimony shows that no past is too broken for God’s grace to restore. His life demonstrates that healing precedes influence, and God can turn even the deepest wounds into a foundation for purpose and ministry.
