Renowned gospel singer Zaza Mokhethi has revealed that she nearly quit her music career following intense public backlash after her appearance on Gogo Skhotheni’s podcast in 2023. The Diphiri hitmaker, now 46, opened up about this trying time during a heartfelt interview on David Mashabela’s King David Studio podcast.
Mokhethi, known for her powerful voice and spiritual depth, said the criticism she faced deeply shook her. Many questioned her faith and Christian beliefs for simply appearing on the podcast, prompting her to issue a public apology at the time.
“I expected the people I loved and supported to stand by me,” she shared. “I’ve helped so many—got them on TV, supported their careers. But in that moment, they were silent. Instead, people I grew up with in KwaThema, people I had never done anything for, were the ones who came to my defense.”
Zaza compared the betrayal to a biblical moment. “I felt like Jesus when He was on the cross,” she said. “People I had helped the most didn’t even want to be associated with me. Some even posted negative things about me on social media.”
Despite the emotional pain and feelings of abandonment, Zaza didn’t let the experience define her or derail her purpose. Her sense of calling in ministry proved stronger than the storm she faced.
“Not long ago, a young boy inboxed me while he was in hospital,” she recalled. “I prayed for him. He later sent a message saying he was discharged and back at work. He thanked me for my prayers. That reminded me that my ministry has impact.”
Zaza believes her calling is centered on healing—both physical and emotional. But she’s learned that before she can help others, she must first be whole herself.
“It’s important that your cup is full so you can pour into other cups,” she said. “That’s why I’ve come to value healing myself first. It’s not just about singing; it’s about restoring people, and that starts with me.”
Her testimony is not only a reminder of the cost of public scrutiny but also a powerful affirmation of purpose, resilience, and faith. Zaza Mokhethi remains a pillar in South Africa’s gospel scene, continuing to inspire and uplift—even in the face of adversity.
