Award-winning South African gospel artist Dumi Mkokstad recently opened up about his powerful performance of “Siyakudinga Moy’Oyingwele” during the Spirit Of Praise 10 recording. The song, which has since resonated deeply with fans across the globe, carries a profound spiritual message — one that Mkokstad himself experienced in an unforgettable way on stage.
Reflecting on the moments leading up to the song, Mkokstad shared that he felt a distinct shift in the spiritual atmosphere as the previous artist was concluding their performance. “As the artist was singing before me was about to finish, I felt a sense of wanting to sit down,” he explained. “Normally, when I feel the presence of ‘Moy’Oyingwele’ (the Holy One), He humbles me so much because I don’t know what He can do. I don’t want to find myself on the floor. Normally my knees would feel weak; I would find it a bit hard to stand. So, I always just choose to sit down — and that was the case here.”
The moment was particularly significant because it marked a transition from an upbeat praise song to a more intimate worship experience. For Mkokstad, this shift was not only musical but deeply spiritual. “I remember the song that was before this one was a praise song, and we had to move from a praise song to a worship song, which for me was not a problem,” he said. “But I sensed that there was something happening in the atmosphere, and we got the confirmation before this song even finished — something was happening at the Arena.”
As the choir began to join him, the spiritual weight of the moment almost overwhelmed Mkokstad. “There’s a part where I stopped. As I said before I started singing the song, I could sense just a move in the Arena,” he recalled. “I think when the choir came in, that’s when I almost just lost it. But I had a responsibility at the time to lead the song, so I could not just cry on stage and end up misrepresenting the song.”
“Siyakudinga Moy’Oyingwele,” which translates to “We Need You, Holy Spirit,” is a heartfelt plea for divine presence and guidance. The song’s lyrics speak to the deep longing of the human spirit for communion with God’s Spirit. Mkokstad’s personal testimony adds layers of authenticity and emotion to the song. His experience of physical weakness and humility in the presence of the Holy Spirit reflects the very essence of the song’s message — an acknowledgment of human frailty and the desperate need for divine empowerment.
Since its release, “Siyakudinga Moy’Oyingwele” has touched countless listeners, many of whom have shared stories of healing, breakthrough, and renewed faith after encountering the song. Mkokstad’s transparent reflection on the experience behind the performance only deepens its impact. It serves as a reminder that true worship transcends performance; it is about surrender, humility, and an authentic connection with God.
