Thinah Zungu, the acclaimed gospel singer behind the hit Nginguthandiwe, has rebuilt his career after a difficult period that followed his appearance on a 2025 Mzansi Magic reality show. The 37-year-old artist from Inanda, north of Durban, says his life has stabilised again after what he describes as one of the most challenging phases of his professional journey. The show, which featured him alongside popular inyanga Dr Khehlelezi, sparked controversy that quickly spread beyond entertainment circles. What was intended to expand his brand ended up triggering backlash that affected both his public image and his bookings. Despite the setback, Zungu now says he sees the experience as part of a larger spiritual lesson.
The fallout from the show was immediate and severe, with Zungu facing isolation from parts of the church community and a noticeable decline in performance opportunities. He revealed that he experienced cancelled gigs and, for the first time in his career, found himself without work during the Easter weekend period, a critical time for gospel performers. Accusations of involvement in black magic further damaged perceptions of his brand, despite his public standing as a gospel artist. The pressure from criticism and distancing by supporters left him deeply hurt, to the point where he could not even bring himself to watch the final episode of his reality series. The situation marked a rare downturn for an artist who had previously enjoyed consistent demand and recognition in the gospel industry.
Zungu has since reflected on the experience as a turning point in his faith and personal resilience. He stated that the ordeal pushed him to rely more on his relationship with God rather than external validation or human support systems. According to him, the distancing he experienced from people he once trusted became a defining moment in his spiritual growth. He explained that his intention with the show was to share his journey and demonstrate what he believes to be the impact of God’s work in his life. Instead, the outcome forced him to reassess where he placed his trust and how he navigates public perception as a faith-based artist. This shift in mindset has become central to how he now approaches both life and his music career.
Despite the controversy, Zungu has made it clear that he harbours no resentment toward those who distanced themselves during his difficult period. He describes the experience as a lesson in understanding how quickly public support can change when pressure builds. The singer has also confirmed that he has no plans to return to reality television, stating that the experience, while historic, is not one he wishes to repeat. He initially agreed to the project out of curiosity and a desire to try something new, but the aftermath changed his perspective completely. For him, the risks outweighed the benefits, and his focus has now shifted back to music and ministry without the influence of televised exposure.
Today, Thinah Zungu says his life is back on track and he has fully recovered from the difficulties that followed the show. While the experience left a lasting impact, it also reshaped his outlook on fame, faith and trust in people. He continues to move forward with a renewed sense of purpose and a stronger sense of independence in his career decisions. The controversy that once threatened to define his journey now stands as a chapter he has chosen to learn from rather than dwell on.
