Abanqobi Back With New Album After Tragic Loss

The soul-stirring voices of Abanqobi are back! The award-winning gospel a cappella group from Umlazi, south of Durban, is making an emotional and powerful comeback with a brand-new 10-track album titled The Journey Continues, set for release on Wednesday, 14 May.

This comeback is particularly meaningful as it follows the heartbreaking loss of their co-founder and beloved leader, Sibusiso Zulu, who passed away in September 2024 at the age of 42 after a short illness. Sibusiso was widely seen as the heartbeat of the group, a visionary who helped shape their sound and purpose. His passing left many wondering whether the group would continue. But as the album’s title boldly states — the journey is far from over.

Formed in 1999 by Sibusiso and fellow members, Abanqobi have made their mark in the South African gospel scene with their unique a cappella style. They are no strangers to recognition, having won several accolades including Best A Cappella Group at the Crown Gospel Music Awards for three consecutive years (2009, 2010, and 2011) — a feat that still impresses gospel fans today.

The group describes the new album as both a tribute and a testimony — a way to honor their brother and continue the mission they started together. In a heartfelt message, they shared:

“There is no day that doesn’t come. A new album for winners is here. If you haven’t found it in stores yet, it’s coming. Lord Jesus, you are the sun. We will follow your will. There’s still a place for us sinners — show us the way and give us the strength of Gideon.”

With this release, Abanqobi isn’t just offering new music — they’re offering healing, hope, and a reminder that purpose doesn’t die with a person, it lives on through those who remain.

Indeed, the journey continues.
