Congratulations on the release of Umhlengi Wami. What does this EP represent in your personal journey of faith and worship?
This EP reflects my journey of faith and worship, celebrating God as my personal Redeemer through every season. It is an expression of my walk with God—acknowledging His grace, restoration, and faithfulness in my life.
This project introduces you more prominently to the mainstream gospel audience. How does this moment feel after years of building your ministry and music consistently?
It is humbling and exciting. It is a confirmation that God honors a step of faith. When I recorded my first album, I stepped out without knowing what to expect. I never thought it would be followed by so many releases, and this level of growth was never something we anticipated. This is a clear reminder of God’s hand in this journey.
The EP blends soul, worship, and traditional Itende influences. How intentional was this sound, and why was it important for you to honor these elements?
The versatility in this EP was intentional. By blending soul, worship, and Itende, I could express worship in a way that is true to who I am as an African. I also drew inspiration from jazz icons like Mama Busi Mhlongo. These elements reflect my identity and allow me to honor both my faith and my African heritage.
Can you share the inspiration and message behind the title track “Umhlengi Wami”?
The track is inspired by Isaiah 43:1–4 (The Message Bible), which reminds us that God is our Creator and Redeemer, saying, “I’ve redeemed you. I’ve called your name. You are mine.” This verse became very real to us during a difficult season as our daughter spent time in and out of ICU. Amid uncertainty, Christ was our only hope. After two long years, redemption finally came. This song is a testimony to God’s faithfulness, even in the hardest moments.
Your music is deeply rooted in scripture and spiritual reflection. How do you approach songwriting to ensure authenticity and spiritual impact?
Most of my songs begin with a single phrase, like “Umhlengi Wami,” and I explore scripture around that theme. Life experiences also shape my songwriting. My songs reflect victory over challenges and are a form of expressing gratitude, thanking God for His faithfulness.
Much of your journey has been shaped through live recordings and church ministry. How has serving in these spaces influenced you as an artist and worship leader?
Being rooted in church ministry has taught me to be intentional as a worship leader. My role is to direct people to God, not myself. I rely solely on the Holy Spirit, responding to His promptings rather than performing. It’s about healing souls and connecting people with the Creator.
Your catalogue reflects a strong connection to live worship experiences. What draws you to ministering in live settings?
Corporate worship is powerful. Worshiping together reminds us that we are not alone in our faith. It builds unity, encourages believers, and creates an atmosphere where God’s presence can be experienced collectively.
Q8: You’ve received recognition from major gospel platforms. How have these milestones shaped your confidence and growth?
Recognition didn’t change my purpose, but confirmed that work done in obedience to God can impact people beyond what we imagine. These platforms allow us to reach more people and increase our influence in ministry.
Recent releases speak strongly to healing, hope, and gratitude. Why are these themes significant in this season of your life?
These themes come from lived experiences. This season has been about healing our child, renewed hope when she recovered, and gratitude to God for His grace, mercy, and redemption.
Looking ahead, how do you hope Umhlengi Wami will impact listeners and your role in South African gospel music?
I hope this EP encourages people to trust God as their Redeemer in every season. As an artist, I want to remain a vessel serving the gospel community. It’s not about showcasing my vocal ability—it’s about leading people to Christ.
