South Africa’s queen of gospel, Dr Rebecca Malope, was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Basadi in Music Awards, held at the Nelson Mandela Theatre in Johannesburg on 1 and 2 August. The heartfelt tribute to her decades-long contribution to the music industry brought the entire venue to its feet in an emotional standing ovation.
Presented by Linah Ngcobo, the 2024 recipient of the same honour — the moment was filled with love, admiration, and deep respect. For many in the crowd, witnessing two generations of legendary women artists embrace on stage symbolised the enduring strength and legacy of South African music.
Visibly moved, Dr Rebecca accepted the award with grace and humility. “Thank you so much. Receiving this award from you guys is pure love. Now I know how much I’m loved in my country,” she said, her voice echoing with gratitude.
She reflected on her early years in the industry, where female artists had to fight to be heard in a male-dominated space. “Back then, we used to listen to men. But today, we are our own voices. We pour petrol for them, pay their rent and hire them too!” Her words sparked laughter, cheers, and a sense of shared pride among the audience.
Dr Rebecca also paid tribute to her fans and the nation that stood by her from the very beginning. “South Africa embraced me when I started. I entered people’s homes uninvited through my music. They supported me and introduced me to the world. I’m celebrated worldwide, but this one here at home is the most special.”
With a career spanning more than three decades, Dr Rebecca Malope has become more than just a household name — she is a symbol of resilience, faith, and musical excellence. Her voice has provided comfort during difficult times, and her message has consistently uplifted hearts across generations.
Her recognition at the Basadi in Music Awards not only celebrates her individual journey but also acknowledges the vital role women have played — and continue to play — in shaping South African music. As she stood on that stage, surrounded by fellow artists and admirers, it was clear that Dr Rebecca’s legacy is as powerful as her voice: timeless, fearless, and rooted in love.
