Mmatema’s album, Heart of Gratitude, tells a story of faith, thanksgiving, and personal reflection. She recently shared the journey behind its creation, giving fans a glimpse into her creative process and the meaning behind each song.
The album began as a live show titled “A Night of Gratitude,” recorded on December 1. Mmatema described the event as a way to close the year with thanksgiving. “The Lord has been good. The Lord has been faithful. We were just coming to present our thanksgiving,” she said. Her team suggested turning the show into a formal recording. After praying for guidance, she felt God’s confirmation, which inspired the full album.
Heart of Gratitude is structured as a story. Each track reflects her journey as a musician and her experiences of faith. “The theme of the album is gratitude,” she explained. “It’s thanksgiving. It’s God’s faithfulness.” The songs move from recognizing God’s kindness to celebrating His protection and guidance, forming a cohesive message of hope and trust.
Mmatema writes her songs from scripture and personal testimony. “If I write it, I’ve seen it. If I write it, I’ve lived it. If I write it, I’m testifying about it,” she said. Many tracks are inspired by moments of prayer, scripture, and melodies that come to her naturally.
When asked about her favorite song, Mmatema declined to pick one. “Every day there’s a song I lean to,” she said. “When you go to the album, whichever song you go to, that’s your favorite.” She noted that the least played track is “Grateful Medley” because it combines songs from her previous works without adding new material.
Among her performances, Mmatema highlighted “He Loves Me Still” and “Piano Hymn” as particularly enjoyable. The latter included a theatrical performance with smoke effects and a flowing dress, creating a memorable stage experience. She noted that some songs, like “He Will Never Fail,” were less enjoyable to perform, but she handled them with grace.
Mmatema also shared insights into her personal routines. She begins each day with prayer, expressing gratitude and seeking guidance. Workouts and family time are part of her mornings, while she avoids social media until she has cleared her mind. Stage nerves remain part of her performances, and she manages them with prayer, deep breathing, and humor.
Her advice to listeners is grounded in faith. She quoted the book of Joshua: “Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged. For the Lord is with you.” She encouraged fans to pursue their goals, even when challenges seem impossible, trusting that God will guide them.
When asked what meal represents her album, Mmatema chose cake. “It’s sweet, comforting, and enjoyable,” she said. She also mentioned boiled eggs, humorously noting that the album gives “muscle of faith.”
Mmatema invited fans to stream Heart of Gratitude, describing it as a complete work while hinting that future projects may include new collaborations. “Let’s see the next album,” she said. “You are my heart.”
