Former International Pentecost Holiness Church Choir lead singer Mme Onica, born Setswoneng Onica Maruma, says going solo has transformed her life and career. Despite her solo success, she remains the lead singer at the International Pentecost Holiness Church headquarters, a role she continues to value deeply. Her journey reflects growth, faith, and a lasting commitment to gospel music ministry.
Born in Mamelodi and raised in Turfloop, Limpopo, Mme Onica told Daily Sun that the response to her solo music has been overwhelming. She says testimonies from listeners across the world confirm the impact of her songs. According to her, lives have been changed through the messages carried in her music. She expressed gratitude to Comforter FLG Modise for his guidance during her solo journey.
Mme Onica also thanked her fans, supporters, event organisers, and promoters who continue to book her. She revealed that a new single is scheduled for release before Good Friday, giving supporters something new to look forward to. Her appreciation reflects a strong connection with her audience and the gospel music community.
Explaining what gospel music means to her, Mme Onica said her calling goes beyond stage performance. She described gospel music as a platform to lead people back to God. Through her songs, listeners find revival and renewed hope for the future. This purpose continues to shape her approach to music and ministry.
Her strong vocal ability opened doors early in her career. Her first major breakthrough came when she recorded jingles for Thobela FM, which helped build her reputation as a vocalist. In the late 1980s, she recorded a bubblegum album after being spotted at an SABC event where she performed as an opening act. That experience laid the foundation for her solo career.
In 2009, her career took a major turn when she was appointed lead singer of the legendary IPCC. She described the role as humbling and career defining. The position allowed her to lead worship at IPHC headquarters events, mass gatherings, and services attended by thousands. In 2010, she led the recording of the choir album titled Thaba ya Sione.
Mme Onica recorded the IPCC album alongside one of the original lead singers, Mme Priscilla. At the time, Mme Emma had already started her solo career, leading some to believe Mme Onica was a replacement. She clarified that she was continuing a legacy built by two influential voices over two decades. Their simple and authentic singing style inspired her leadership.
Today, Mme Onica boasts several albums and continues to receive bookings at major gospel festivals. In 2025, she collaborated with producer Tshego AMG to release her album A kgalemela. She says the album was well received by fans and the media. The love she experiences during live performances continues to humble and motivate her.
