Award-winning gospel singer and pastor Khaya Mthethwa is making a powerful return to television with his brand-new show The Upper Room, set to air every Sunday on Mzansi Magic Music. After a noticeable hiatus from the small screen, the 37-year-old star is back — and he’s bringing a fresh, soul-filled experience to South African audiences.
Khaya, who has spent the last few years focusing on radio and his pastoral calling, is stepping into a new season of creativity and connection. The Upper Room promises to be more than just a gospel show; it’s an intimate worship experience designed to feel like a spiritual family gathering right in the comfort of viewers’ homes.
“This was inspired by us wanting to produce something that’s a bit fresher for people at home,” Khaya told Daily Sun. “Even the setup is very couchy and very relaxed. We wanted it to feel like a family gathering of worshippers.”
With a concept that breaks away from the traditional music show format, The Upper Room is about creating space for people to worship and experience gospel music in an authentic, down-to-earth way. From the set design to the flow of the show, everything has been intentionally crafted to feel warm, personal, and immersive.
Khaya isn’t just the host — he’s fully hands-on behind the scenes. He’s directing the music, overseeing rehearsals, and making sure each episode reflects the heart of worship. “I’m literally carrying the show,” he shared. “By the time I come out to present, I’ve already immersed myself in the music.”
Unlike his previous shows, The Upper Room is unapologetically focused on the music. It places less emphasis on interviews and more on raw, powerful performances by South Africa’s favourite gospel artists. Khaya explained, “It’s more music. Because people love music. From a natural connection to a conversation — not the other way around.”
Fans can expect an uplifting blend of praise, worship, and meaningful musical moments, all led by a seasoned artist who understands the power of gospel music both on and off the stage.
The Upper Room premieres this Sunday on Mzansi Magic Music, ushering in a new era of inspirational television with Khaya Mthethwa at the helm.
