Mmatema Gavu Misses Spirit of Praise 11 Recording as She Focuses on Personal Projects

Gospel music lovers were left disappointed on Saturday, 28 June 2025, when beloved singer Mmatema Gavu was noticeably absent from the Spirit of Praise 11 live recording. The event, a highlight on the South African gospel calendar, drew thousands of fans who expected to see their favourite artists grace the stage.

Following her no-show, speculation grew on social media, with many fans asking whether Mmatema had left the group for good. Despite the swirling questions, the singer has remained quiet online, choosing not to address the topic publicly.

Speaking briefly to Daily Sun, Mmatema made it clear she didn’t want to dwell on the matter. “We decided not to make it a thing and I’m not making it a thing. And I don’t want to talk about it,” she said, keeping the details of her absence low-key.

Spirit of Praise manager Matthew Nkabinde offered clarity, explaining that Mmatema is currently focusing on her personal projects. “She requested that she wants to work on her new project. She recently released a new project. She’s busy pushing that and she’s going on a national tour. We’re very excited for her,” said Matthew.

He also emphasized that Spirit of Praise remains a nurturing platform for gospel artists. “Spirit of Praise is about empowering up-and-coming artists. And once they make it, they branch out and do things on their own. That’s why when you look at our social media page, we post them and show that we are proud of their progress. We wish Mmatema well and you guys will still see her on our tours. She’s family and we love her,” he added.

While Mmatema’s absence left a gap, fans can look forward to fresh voices joining the group. Matthew announced that Spirit of Praise has welcomed Nontokozo Mkhize, Xola Toto from Cape Town, Katlego Seobi from the Free State, and Kgaogelo Kekana. These new additions are set to bring new energy and inspiration to the renowned gospel collective.

“We had an amazing project and the new guys are amazing,” said Matthew, adding that the team will now move into post-production with the album expected for release in October 2025. A nationwide tour will follow to promote the new music.

This change comes just months after Reverend Benjamin Dube also announced his departure from the group in April 2025. In his statement, he reflected on the deep impact Spirit of Praise has had on his ministry, but acknowledged it was time to embrace a new season.

Despite the shifting lineup, Spirit of Praise continues to serve as a springboard for gospel talent, with fans eagerly awaiting the next chapter of inspiring music.
