Renowned South African gospel singer and songwriter Ncebakazi Msomi recently shared a heartfelt reflection on a pivotal moment in her musical journey — the first time she wrote a song for a formal platform. The song, Work of the Blood, was featured on Joyous Celebration, Vol. 16, and marked her official debut as a songwriter on one of the most influential gospel stages in South Africa.
“I’ll never forget how affirming it was for Bhut’ Nqubeko and tat’ uMkhize to approve my very first song written for such a big stage,” Msomi recalled. At the time, Nqubeko Mbatha and Lindelani Mkhize were key leaders of the Joyous Celebration ensemble, known for identifying and nurturing gospel talent. Their support played a crucial role in Msomi’s growth as a spirit-led composer.
Msomi revealed that although a different song had originally been proposed for the album, she felt a strong conviction to present Work of the Blood instead. “I knew the song that had been proposed first was going to be a big song, but I felt strongly that this song would be a redemption anthem for the people God intended it for,” she explained. “So I took that chance to rather present it as from my heart — and God did the rest.”
Work of the Blood has since become a beloved track among Joyous Celebration fans. Its powerful message of redemption and grace has resonated deeply with audiences, both locally and internationally. Msomi’s heartfelt delivery and spiritual sensitivity continue to make the song a standout piece in the Joyous Celebration catalogue.
The live performance, captured during the recording of Joyous Celebration Vol. 16, remains a powerful testament to the song’s impact. Watch the performance here:
For Ncebakazi Msomi, the success of Work of the Blood was not just about the music — it was about obedience, faith, and allowing God to use her gift to minister to others.
