Nontokozo Mkhize to Lead Tribute at Inaugural KZN Memoriam Music Concert

Gospel singer Nontokozo Mkhize is set to take centre stage at the inaugural KZN Memoriam Music Concert, a heartfelt event dedicated to honouring some of KwaZulu-Natal’s most beloved late musical icons. Taking place on Saturday, 14 June 2025, at Max’s Lifestyle in Umlazi, the concert will be a powerful celebration of life, music, and legacy.

As one of the lead performers, Nontokozo Mkhize will use her stirring vocals and deep connection to gospel to pay tribute to the stars who helped shape KZN’s vibrant music scene. Among those being remembered are reggae legend Lucky Dube from Newcastle, gospel great Deborah Fraser from KwaMashu, maskandi icon Mgqumeni Khumalo from Nquthu, and Big Nuz members Sibusiso “R Mashesha” Khomo and Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo from Umlazi.

For Mkhize, the event carries personal significance—particularly as she prepares to honour the legacy of fellow gospel star Deborah Fraser. Known for her powerful voice and spiritual depth, Fraser left an indelible mark on South African gospel music. Mkhize will perform some of Fraser’s most loved songs, creating a space for fans to reflect and reconnect with the late artist’s music.

“This is more than just a performance—it’s a chance to say thank you to those who paved the way for us,” said Mkhize. “Deborah Fraser was a beacon for many of us in the gospel world. Being able to sing her songs again, for the people who loved her most, is an honour I carry with my whole heart.”

The concert is spearheaded by Phindile Zulu of Thingoluhle Events, who emphasised the importance of preserving the memory of KZN’s fallen music heroes. According to Zulu, the concert was created to ensure that the contributions of these icons are never forgotten. “This is about remembering our legends and celebrating their impact. We want people to leave the concert with a renewed appreciation for the music and the legacy these artists left behind,” said Zulu.

In addition to Mkhize, the evening’s line-up features gqom star Babes Wodumo, kwaito veteran Danger, amapiano hitmaker Kelvin Momo, and the remaining members of Big Nuz. Each artist will perform songs made famous by the honourees, offering fans a night of nostalgia, reflection, and community spirit. While no live maskandi acts are scheduled, organisers have ensured that a DJ set will keep the genre’s heartbeat alive with timeless tracks from Mgqumeni Khumalo and others.

For Mkhize, the concert represents both a personal tribute and a communal act of remembrance. “Music connects us to the past in ways words sometimes can’t,” she said. “I’m grateful to be part of an event that allows us to grieve, celebrate, and give thanks—together.”

As the music community and fans gather in Umlazi for this one-of-a-kind event, Nontokozo Mkhize’s performance promises to be one of the evening’s most emotional highlights. Her voice, filled with reverence and soul, will help carry the legacies of KZN’s musical legends forward—reminding all in attendance that while these icons may be gone, their spirit still sings.
