Omega Circle, the South African gospel project that has built its catalogue through steady, consistent releases, is back with its fifth EP. Uyinkosi, which means “He is the Lord” in isiZulu, follows June’s Spirit Lift Me. It is the project’s most direct statement of faith yet.
A Title That Says It All
Uyinkosi is a proclamation more than a title. Across six tracks, the EP moves between worship, reassurance, surrender and celebration, and each song returns to the same truth. The opening title track sets the tone, and the rest of the project builds on it.
Six Tracks, Many Textures
Omega Circle has never confined itself to one sound, and Uyinkosi shows that range:
- Uyinkosi opens the EP with the central declaration.
- Intando Yakho is a hymn-based song about surrender and “Thy will be done,” rooted in the church traditions many South Africans grew up with.
- Don’t Be Afraid, produced by The Cool, is a reassuring message for anyone facing uncertain times.
- Bophelo, a hip hop gospel track produced by The Cool and featuring The Cuzins, brings a different rhythm and delivery to the project’s message of life.
- Hamba! is a call to move forward in faith.
- Sedilaka (Live), recorded with The Cool, closes the EP with the energy of a congregation in full voice.
The mix of languages and styles is deliberate. Omega Circle writes across isiZulu, isiXhosa, Shona and English, and Uyinkosi follows that approach. A listener in Soweto, Harare or Mthatha can find a song that speaks in a language close to home.
Building on Momentum
The EP arrives at a strong moment for the project. “Ngembathe” has become its biggest single and is nearing 5,000 TikTok posts, which shows how readily listeners have taken the song into their own content. Its sound has spread faster than its video views, which suggests people are using it as a sound in its own right and not only watching it. That is the kind of organic life that lasts.
Uyinkosi is also the latest chapter in a catalogue-first approach that began with the gospel EPs Worship 2.0 and Bambelela. Omega Circle has treated each release as part of a growing body of work, with every song adding to the listening life of the ones before it. Sedilaka has been a standout in that story, and its live version here gives it new life.
The Collaboration With The Cool
Producer The Cool is a key creative partner on this project, with a hand in three of the six tracks. His work gives the EP its contemporary edge without losing the reverence at the heart of the songs. The partnership also runs through the wider Lifted project, a live gospel, Amapiano and jazz album that Omega Circle and The Cool are creating together.
Why It Matters
Gospel in South Africa is a living, shifting tradition, and artists like Omega Circle are finding new ways to carry its message to younger listeners without leaving its roots behind. Uyinkosi sits between the hymn and the hip hop verse and holds both with conviction.
For listeners looking for music that comforts, challenges and lifts, this EP offers six reasons to press play.
Uyinkosi is available on streaming platforms now.
