The Spirit Behind “Ufanelwe” by Spirit of Praise feat. Omega Khunou

Spirit of Praise has released a moving behind-the-scenes feature titled The Spirit Behind “Ufanelwe”, offering fans a personal look into the creation, inspiration, and spiritual experience behind the powerful worship song “Ufanelwe,” performed by Omega Khunou. Recorded live at Sunbet Arena in Tshwane, the track is part of Spirit of Praise 11 and has quickly become one of the project’s most impactful performances.

In the video, Omega Khunou opens up about what it felt like performing “Ufanelwe” for the first time. He recalls the tense and emotional moment before the lights came on, with music director Sabu counting them down — “Omega and Dumi, here we go. Three, two, one, hit it.” It was both exciting and overwhelming, marking the beginning of a worship moment that would touch thousands.

Omega shared that “Ufanelwe” was the first artist song of the night, meaning it set the tone for the entire recording. He described it as a heavy responsibility that required trust from Spirit of Praise’s leadership. “Being the opening artist comes with trust. It’s like a soccer coach choosing the first player to take a penalty — they have to deliver and set the mood,” he explained.

The song, written by Omega, came to him in a moment of reflection and worship. He wanted a song that would purely adore God, not ask for anything, but simply declare His worthiness. “At night while sleeping, the words came to me — ‘Ufanelwe Udumo’ — and I woke up, went to the keyboard, and the melody came,” he said. He later shared the song with Minister Sabu, who helped expand and arrange it for the choir.

Omega revealed that performing the song live was both a spiritual and technical challenge. While feeling the presence of God so strongly, he still had to stay in sync with the band, the choir, and the music director. “You can feel the Spirit hitting the room, but you must remain disciplined. You have to listen to the click, the arrangement, and the MD’s voice while staying connected to the Spirit,” he said.

As one of the anchors of Spirit of Praise 11 alongside Dumi Mkokstad, Omega emphasized the importance of leadership, humility, and unity within the team. “Being an anchor means you lead by example. You don’t compete, you complement others so that we bring one message. ‘Next Level’ means growing together,” he explained.

He also shared that the “Holy Holy” section of the song was inspired by Revelation, where angels continually cry “Holy” before God’s throne. “In that section, people and angels unite in worship, declaring together that God is worthy,” Omega said. The choir’s harmonies and dynamic vocal layering made the moment unforgettable.

Reflecting on the experience, Omega encouraged listeners to use “Ufanelwe” in their personal devotion and worship. “May this song heal you, touch you, and reconnect you to that first love of worship. We can worship God when things are good and even when they are not. He is worthy,” he said.

“The Spirit Behind ‘Ufanelwe’” offers an honest glimpse into Omega’s faith journey and the divine inspiration that shaped one of Spirit of Praise’s most powerful songs.
