Umlazi Gospel Choir Warns Public of Impersonation

The acclaimed Umlazi Gospel Choir (UGC), under the directorship of Sakhile Innocent Ncanana, has issued a strong public warning following what it calls a “deliberate and damaging misuse” of its name by a group of former associates.

In a formal statement released this week, the choir expressed deep concern over an upcoming event advertised under the name “Umlazi Gospel Choir The Original,” scheduled for 28 June 2025 at Umlazi Cinema Hall in Umlazi W Section. UGC has categorically distanced itself from this concert and clarified that it has not sold or transferred its brand name to any third party.

“We want to make it clear to our supporters and the broader public that this event is not organized or endorsed by the Umlazi Gospel Choir,” the statement read. “The individuals behind this are using our name without permission, misleading the public, and jeopardizing a legacy we have built since 2016.”

The original Umlazi Gospel Choir, celebrated for its dynamic performances and international recognition, says it has seen multiple attempts to hijack its identity, particularly on social media, by individuals who were once affiliated with the group.

“They have falsely positioned themselves as ‘Umlazi Gospel Choir The Original (UGC),’ a move that not only confuses the public but also damages the reputation we’ve worked so hard to build,” the statement continued.

UGC is urging the public not to purchase tickets for the 28 June event, warning that attendees may face disappointment both in terms of service quality and entertainment value. “We cannot be held responsible for any losses incurred as we are speaking out well in advance,” they added.

The group also confirmed it is taking legal steps to protect its name and reputation. “We are consulting our legal team and plan to initiate legal action against the event organisers to prevent further misuse of our brand and to stop this unauthorized event from proceeding.”

Since its formation, Umlazi Gospel Choir has become a staple in South Africa’s gospel scene, known for its powerful harmonies and inspirational performances. This incident, the group says, is a painful reminder of how artistic integrity can be compromised in the digital era—but also a call to remain vigilant.

“We owe our success to the loyal support of our fans, and we will continue to safeguard the name they have come to trust and celebrate,” the statement concluded.

Supporters are encouraged to follow the official Umlazi Gospel Choir platforms for accurate updates and announcements.
