Abanqobi Overcomes Tragedy and Internal Struggles After Losing Two Members as SAMA Nomination Brings New Hope

Gospel group Abanqobi has faced one of the most difficult periods in its history after losing two of its members within a short span of time. The group, based in Umlazi, Durban, has been widely recognised for its uplifting gospel sound and popular songs such as Udondolo and Likude Ikhaya. Despite their success in the South African gospel scene, recent events tested their unity, faith, and emotional strength. The passing of two key members placed the group under immense pressure and forced them to confront uncertainty about their future. Even so, Abanqobi continues to stand as one of the respected names in African indigenous gospel music.

The group lost Sibusiso Zulu in 2024 after a short illness, followed by Siyabonga Ndlovu in 2025, also after a brief period of illness. These back to back losses left members devastated and struggling to process the reality of what had happened. The emotional impact extended beyond music, affecting friendships and the daily functioning of the group. Members were forced to deal with grief while still trying to maintain their identity as performers. The situation created a heavy atmosphere during rehearsals and performances, as the absence of their colleagues remained deeply felt.

As the grief continued, Abanqobi members admitted that the group nearly broke apart. Fear and confusion spread among them as they tried to understand why two deaths had occurred so close together. Some members questioned whether there was a deeper issue affecting the group, while others struggled with emotional exhaustion. Rehearsals became difficult to attend, and motivation dropped significantly during this period. The group also experienced differences in how individuals processed their grief, which added strain to their unity. Despite these challenges, they made a conscious decision to remain together and protect what they had built over many years.

Amid these struggles, Abanqobi received an important career boost when they were nominated for the 32nd annual South African Music Awards in the category Best African Indigenous Faith Album for their project The Journey Continues. The nomination placed them alongside strong competitors including Amadodana Ase Weseli, Di Bruin Gospel Projects, and Zion Iskhalanga Academy. For a group that has been active in the industry for more than two decades, the recognition reaffirmed their place in South African gospel music. The nomination also served as a reminder of their influence and consistency despite recent hardships. It positioned them once again in the national spotlight at a time when they needed encouragement the most.

Abanqobi spokesman and music director Mandla Ntuli described the nomination as a source of strength during a painful period. He explained that after losing two members, the group struggled with fear and uncertainty about their future. Some members even questioned whether they were facing a curse or negative force due to the timing of the losses. Ntuli said the emotional toll was so heavy that attendance at rehearsals dropped as members tried to cope in different ways. However, he emphasised that the group eventually pulled together, choosing unity and faith over fear and division. The nomination, according to him, reminded them that their work still carries purpose and impact.

Today, Abanqobi continues to move forward while honouring the memory of the members they lost. Their journey reflects resilience built through pain, faith, and shared purpose in gospel music. The group remains committed to their calling of uplifting audiences through spiritual messages and indigenous sound. Their experience has also strengthened their bond as they navigate both grief and recognition in the industry. As they prepare for the South African Music Awards, Abanqobi stands as a testament to perseverance in the face of deep personal and professional challenges.
