South Africa’s beloved “Queen of Gospel,” Dr. Rebecca Malope, was celebrated in spectacular fashion on Saturday, April 1st, 2023, as a star-studded gospel music festival was held in her honour at The Bears Palace in Mpumalanga. The event, which drew fans, family, fellow musicians, and admirers from across the country, marked an extraordinary 35-year journey in music—a journey that has inspired millions and shaped the gospel music landscape in South Africa and beyond.
Dr. Malope, who is also a recipient of the prestigious Order of Ikhamanga, was visibly moved by the occasion. “I feel so blessed to have a whole event created to celebrate me. Wow! God is good,” she said with emotion. “In all my years in the industry, I had a fear of only being celebrated once I was gone, but God made sure I get to receive and smell my flowers while I’m still alive and well.”
The event was more than just a tribute—it was a celebration of a living legend. A stellar line-up of gospel powerhouses took to the stage, including Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Lusanda, Solly Mahlangu, Ncandweni Christ Ambassadors, Kholeka, Sipho Ngwenya, Sipho Makhabane, Takie Ndou, and Ayanda Ntanzi, each delivering soul-stirring performances in tribute to Dr. Malope’s remarkable legacy.
One of the evening’s most touching moments came with the unveiling of a life-like statue of Dr. Malope—a symbol of appreciation for a woman whose voice and presence have been a source of healing, hope, and joy for generations.
Brandon Tshabangu, owner of The Bears Palace and coordinator of the event, shared his reason for selecting Dr. Malope as this year’s honouree: “Dr. Rebecca has a tremendous voice and a unique gift to touch lives through her music. We wanted to celebrate her not just for her success, but for her spirit, her grace, and the way she has ministered to this nation for 35 years.”
Known for timeless hits such as “Bayos’khomba,” “Umoya Wam,” “Shwele Baba,” “Ngiyekeleni,” and the anthemic “Lord You Are Good,” Dr. Malope’s discography boasts over 30 albums. She has collaborated with legends such as Tsepo Tshola, Vuyo Mokoena, Ringo, and the late Brenda Fassie, and was once the leading female voice of the iconic group Pure Magic. Through it all, her message has remained one of faith, perseverance, and unconditional love.
The tribute follows The Bears Palace’s previous successful honouring of kwaito legend Zola 7, which drew over 15,000 fans, continuing a tradition of giving icons their due while they can still feel the love and appreciation of the people.
For Dr. Rebecca Malope, the night was a powerful reminder of the impact she has made—not just as a singer, but as a vessel of comfort, faith, and national pride. And as her voice rang out one more time, it was clear: 35 years in, her song is far from over.
