The funeral arrangements for the late Reverend Dr Simon Dingane “S.D.” Gumbi have officially been announced. The much-loved 66-year-old preacher, known for his powerful voice and signature phrase “U-Amen Usakhona?”, will be laid to rest in Standerton, Mpumalanga.
Dr Gumbi, who passed away on Monday, 14 July after a prolonged illness, rose to prominence through Ukhozi FM’s popular Sunday night programme Unkulunkulu Nomuntu Omusha in the 1990s. His messages of faith touched millions of listeners across South Africa.
According to the family spokesperson, Pastor Thami Nhlapo, the funeral service will take place on Tuesday, 22 July, at the Sakhile Community Stadium in Standerton. The family is currently awaiting confirmation from the Mpumalanga provincial government regarding a request for a state funeral.
Ahead of the burial, Dr Gumbi will be honoured with two memorial services. The first, regarded as the main memorial, is scheduled for Thursday, 18 July at 1pm at the Standerton AOG Nicholas Bhengu Memorial Church. Pastor Nhlapo urged mourners to arrive on time to avoid seating issues due to anticipated large crowds.
A second memorial service will be held in Tsakane, Gauteng, on Saturday, 19 July at 1pm, hosted by Umndeni Church. The location was chosen to accommodate the many people in Gauteng who were also impacted by Dr Gumbi’s ministry.
Pastor Nhlapo warned against circulating false claims that the state funeral has already been approved, emphasizing that the final decision rests with the office of the Mpumalanga Premier and will be officially communicated when confirmed.
He also shared that a special delegation has been appointed to manage musical tributes during the funeral service. Gospel industry veterans Percy Ingle and Sipho “Big Fish” Makhabane will lead the team. Artists who wish to perform are encouraged to liaise directly with the delegation to ensure proper planning and coordination.
The family has extended an open invitation to the public to come and pay their final respects to a man they describe as a faithful servant of God who dedicated his life to preaching hope and healing.
