Gospel singer Mmatema Gavu is expanding her ministry into acting once again with her debut on Mzansi Magic’s new drama series Genesis. Known for her powerful voice and inspiring music, the 33-year-old plays Basetsana, a character that will both inspire and surprise viewers.
Mmatema described returning to acting as an emotional and humbling experience. “Seeing myself back on screen was nerve-wracking at first, but then I felt immense gratitude. This was a prayer I made at the start of the year, and God has answered it,” she said. She added that sharing the moment with her children made it even more special.
Her return to acting comes from a place of passion and purpose. “I hadn’t acted for about two years, and I genuinely enjoy it. It’s part of my journey, just like music and ministry. I wanted to reconnect with this side of my calling,” she explained.
In Genesis, Basetsana enters as a gifted young singer called to help revive a struggling record label. Her character navigates the tension between ambition and faith, loyalty, and personal integrity. Mmatema says viewers will see Basetsana face challenging decisions that test her values, while also experiencing her beautiful voice.
The series features Mmatema performing two tracks from her latest album, O Lokile and Wantwanela. She will also take the album on a tour that celebrates gospel music and supports emerging talent through her foundation. The tour begins in Polokwane on 11 October, moves to Botswana on 29 November, and concludes in Johannesburg on 5 December.
Mmatema Gavu’s return to acting reflects her dedication to her calling, combining her music ministry with storytelling that uplifts and entertains. Through Genesis, she continues to inspire audiences both on stage and screen.
