Koko Records Continues to Redefine Gospel Music in South Africa

Co-owned by Nqubeko Mbatha and Thoko Mthembu, the label has grown from modest beginnings into a leading force shaping the gospel sound and culture in the country.

From its early days, the label built its reputation on consistency and purpose. Nqubeko, Thoko, and Ntokozo Mbambo carried the vision, putting in work both on stage and behind the scenes. The signing of Ayanda Ntanzi marked a turning point. His rise inspired a generation of gospel lovers and confirmed the label’s ability to develop talent.

Koko Records’ growth has been steady, with no shortcuts. Every move has been intentional, focused on building artists, strengthening the brand, and spreading the message. This approach has created a label that feels like a family. Artists collaborate closely, producing music that is as purposeful as it is powerful.

One standout example is The United Tour. This series of concerts celebrates music, unity, and faith, bringing together the entire Koko family with special guests. The Johannesburg leg was a major success, and attention now shifts to Durban for the next chapter. These events go beyond standard performances, offering immersive experiences with high-quality music, creative staging, and strong production.

Behind the scenes, the label has also expanded. The media and digital team produces striking visuals and effective online campaigns, reaching audiences far beyond the concert venues. The recent addition of Mmangaliso has strengthened the roster, her seamless integration showing that Koko is more than a label; it is a creative home.

Talent development remains a priority. Through talent searches led by Nqubeko, new voices are given a platform to perform alongside industry leaders. This is how Mmangaliso was discovered, and the tradition continues, with fresh talent identified at the Johannesburg event and now again for Durban.
