Mphotholozi on His Gospel Journey and New Single ‘Nyakata’

In the ever-evolving landscape of gospel music, few artists manage to seamlessly intertwine deep spiritual messages with innovative musicality. Nkosinathi “Mphotholozi” Fakude stands out as one such artist. With the release of his latest single, “Nyakata,” on May 16, 2025, Mphotholozi embarks on a new chapter that not only showcases his artistic growth but also marks a significant spiritual milestone in his journey.

“Nyakata,” derived from the SiSwati term meaning “move” or “hover,” draws profound inspiration from scriptures like Genesis 1:2 and Exodus 33:15. The song encapsulates the essence of divine movement and presence, urging listeners to embrace their God-given purposes with faith and obedience. Mphotholozi’s unique blend of traditional African gospel with contemporary sounds creates a refreshing and resonant experience for a diverse audience.

Tell us about your musical background and how this Nyakata has impacted your life.

Music has been a legacy in my family. I’m a GPK (Grandparents’ Pastor’s Kid), and we inherited this calling from our grandparents. I grew up in the church, surrounded by worship and musical gifting. Gospel music became more than art it became an assignment. This project carries that generational mantle. It has deeply impacted my life by ministering to me and affirming that the vision God placed in my heart is now alive. It’s been a journey of healing, obedience, and release.

Who has had a life-altering impact on your music and career?

A close brother and friend, Bonginkosi Zikhali, supported me from the very beginning and has played a huge role in my career. He connected me to networks I wouldn’t have reached on my own and walked with me in full support. I also learned from gospel pioneers like Dr. Derrick Nzimande one of the OGs of the genre and had the honor of visiting his home for teachings. Serving under Apostle MVG Lephoko also sparked something powerful in me as a songwriter and worshipper.

If not music, which career path would you have chosen and why?

Music has always been my first love, but I did pursue electrical engineering. Still, music found its way back into my life or perhaps I found my way back to it. It’s more than a career. It’s life and calling.

What challenges have you faced and overcome?

Breaking into the music space wasn’t easy. Being new, self-funded, and trying to build a presence came with financial and emotional challenges. I also faced rejection from people I looked up to, but I chose consistency and resilience. By God’s grace, I’ve overcome much and I’m still rising.

Where do you see yourself in the next few years, and who are your dream collaborations?

I see myself leading a talent search campaign and building a platform where new artists can grow. I want to establish a full music empire complete with a studio, mentorship programs, and global distribution. My goal is to see our music reach the ends of the earth. My dream collaborations are with Dr. Derrick Nzimande, Ntokozo Mbambo, and Dr. Tumi.

Mphotholozi’s “Nyakata” is more than just a musical release; it’s a testament to his unwavering faith, resilience, and dedication to his calling. Through challenges and triumphs, he has remained steadfast, using his platform to inspire and uplift. As he continues to break new ground in gospel music, Mphotholozi’s journey serves as a beacon for aspiring artists and believers alike, reminding us all of the power of purpose-driven artistry.
