South African gospel star Nontokozo Mkhize has taken a bold step into a fresh sound with the release of her new single “Okubi”, a collaboration with amapiano hitmaker Kelvin Momo and dance music giants Major League DJz. The track blends her powerful gospel influence with amapiano’s signature rhythms, creating a unique sound that bridges faith and contemporary music.
Speaking about the inspiration behind “Okubi”, Mkhize explained how the song tackles real-life struggles and spiritual endurance. “I got called by Major League to do the song. It speaks about temptations, the things that we face in this world, and all the bad things that come our way, hence the title: Okubi. The song is a prayer to God that whatever I face in this life, whoever I meet, and whatever happens, may it never change the person I am. May it never move me from my faith,” she said.
The collaboration signals a shift in gospel’s reach into wider music spaces, while staying rooted in spiritual messages. “Okubi” is not only a fusion of genres but also a reminder of how gospel artists are adapting and expanding into new territories without compromising their core message.
Looking ahead, Nontokozo Mkhize revealed more plans for 2025. She confirmed that fans can expect the deluxe edition of her debut album before the year ends. “There’s definitely going to be new music before this year ends. For starters I want to do Lindiwe (Deluxe) and I also have Langa Mavuso on that version of the album. I’m still going to record some more songs and see who else I can put on the record. I am also looking to drop ‘Ekhaya’, which has been trending on TikTok,” she added.
With “Okubi” already sparking conversation, the upcoming deluxe album and the release of “Ekhaya” are set to strengthen Mkhize’s position as one of South Africa’s most influential gospel voices in 2025. Fans can expect more innovative collaborations and spiritually rich music as she continues to merge gospel with contemporary sounds.
