Omega Khunou Steps into Leadership Role at Spirit of Praise Following Bishop Benjamin Dube’s Departure

Celebrated gospel singer Omega Khunou is stepping into a new season of leadership within the acclaimed gospel ensemble Spirit of Praise, marking a significant shift in the group’s journey following the departure of legendary founder Bishop Benjamin Dube.

From humble beginnings as a background vocalist, Omega has risen through the ranks since joining the group in 2010. Now 44, he’s taking on a larger leadership role—one earned through years of hard work, faith, and musical excellence.

In a heartfelt conversation with Daily Sun, Omega reflected on his growth within the group. “Honestly speaking, this journey has only been possible because of the grace of God,” he said. “When I think back to how I started, I wasn’t confident in my voice. I didn’t come in thinking I had arrived. I came in unsure—but with a calling.”

Omega’s story is one of perseverance and spiritual dedication. Starting off as “just a background vocalist,” he was eventually given the chance to lead a song. From that moment, opportunities kept coming, and so did the trust from the Spirit of Praise leadership team.

“It’s been a journey of learning, pushing myself, and understanding what people want,” Omega explained. “Each time we record a new volume, we have to dig deeper—spiritually, musically, emotionally. And that discipline helped me grow.”

Though stepping into a visible leadership role, Omega is quick to clarify that no one can replace Bishop Benjamin Dube. “That name carries too much weight. That legacy is sacred,” he said. “I’m not trying to fill his shoes. What I am doing—with my brother, Dumi Mkokstad—is continuing the work. We’ve been asked to anchor the group and lead it forward with love and vision.”

Fans can expect exciting developments from Spirit of Praise in the near future, including upcoming tours and a renewed commitment to showcasing fresh talent.

“We’ve already included two new voices in our last recording,” Omega shared. “Dumi and I believe in opening doors for others. That’s what was done for me. Now, it’s my turn to do the same.”

In addition to his work with the group, Omega is also preparing for a major milestone in his solo career. “I’ll be recording my solo live project on 2 May 2026. It’s something close to my heart, and I’m excited for people to hear what God is doing through me.”

As Spirit of Praise enters this new chapter, guided by voices like Omega Khunou and Dumi Mkokstad, one thing is clear—the legacy of worship, excellence, and ministry built by Bishop Dube is in capable, faithful hands.
