JUDAH_ZA Interview

Growing up as a pastor’s kid — or PK, as many of us are called — is a unique experience that few truly understand unless they’ve lived it. For JUDAH_ZA, born Dumisani Ngwenya, the journey was less about pressure in the traditional sense and more about a silent, constant observation of what it meant to live with purpose. From an early age, he was taught to walk in alignment with a higher calling, an expectation that came with both moments of inner tension and deep spiritual reward. Raised in the heart of Kwa-Thema, where music echoed through streets and church halls alike, Judah found himself at the crossroads of faith, community, and creativity — a path that would eventually define not only the music he makes, but also the man he has become.

What was it like growing up as a pastor’s kid (PK), the pressures, rewards, and overall experience?

Growing up as a PK (Preacher’s Kid) was more about learning and observing than it was about fully experiencing the pressures. We were always expected to represent a certain image, which sometimes created frustration during the self-discovery phase of life. But there are rewards, especially when you walk in alignment with God’s purpose for your life. My parents’ comments about my relationship with God made a huge difference — they always emphasized walking on purpose, and when you do, the rewards come naturally.

How has your background shaped the music you make and the person you are today?

“ The local talent from my community in Kwa-Thema had a huge influence on me. Growing up in a place where music was the heartbeat of the community really shaped my understanding of the power of music to inspire and uplift. Their artistry pushed me to be better and to always stay true to my roots.”

Please share your early experiences, influences, and challenges.

My early days were shaped by influences from male figures in my life; people like my Uncle Musa, Uncle Churchill, and Uncle Sabelo, who were part of my community in Kwa-Thema, where I grew up. They were key figures in keeping my love for music alive, especially at a time when I didn’t even fully understand the gift I had. Growing up in a humble neighborhood, access to musical equipment and tech was limited, but being a PK gave me some advantages, especially with church connections. The biggest challenge, though, was the lack of platforms, but hey, being a PK also had its perks.

3. Which artists had a great influence on your life?

Some of the artists who had a massive influence on me are Nqubeko Mbatha, Ntokozo Mbambo, and Khaya Mthethwa. Their music and life experiences shaped a lot of how I approach my own craft. They’ve shown me how to mix purpose with passion and always maintain excellence. Their journeys continue to inspire me to aim higher and be true to my faith in the process.

4. When did you start making music and how?

I started making music at a young age, but it wasn’t until I got older that I began to take it seriously. My love for music was always there, but it was really my experiences growing up in a musically rich environment that pushed me to pursue it more intentionally. I’ve been able to learn through personal experiences and collaborations, gradually developing a deeper understanding of how to create and produce music that speaks to the heart.

5. What impact and legacy would you like to leave behind for yourself?

I want to leave behind a legacy that’s about more than just making music. I want to be remembered as someone who helped others find their purpose, built platforms for young talent, and lived with integrity. My legacy should reflect a life that wasn’t just about success, but about creating lasting impact — inspiring others to walk in their purpose with excellence and faith.

6. Your story serves as an inspiration to aspiring artists and entrepreneurs. Does this not come with pressure?

Yes, there’s definitely pressure, but it’s a good kind of pressure. I want my journey to inspire others, but at the same time, I remind myself that I’m still learning and growing. I’m not perfect, and I don’t have it all figured out. But the pressure comes from wanting to lead by example and show the next generation that they can achieve great things, even when the road isn’t easy.

JUDAH_ZA’s story is not just one of musical evolution, but one of purposeful living forged through faith, community, and the unrelenting belief in one’s calling. From the quiet lessons learned as a PK to the vibrant influence of local talent and the unwavering support of key mentors, his journey reflects the beauty of staying true to one’s roots while dreaming beyond limitations. Now stepping into his own light as an artist, Judah isn’t just creating music — he’s building a legacy defined by impact, integrity, and inspiration. For aspiring creatives and believers alike, his life serves as a reminder: when you walk in your purpose, the path may be narrow, but the destination is powerful.
